During my second visit to the boardwalk, I was eating breakfast with some friends at the Skinny Pancake and ventured down to the lake while I waited for my food. Rather than going to the lookout, I walked straight onto the lake, which was frozen solid and could easily support my weight. The area was full of patterns: the cracks on the ice, the white bubbles of air that had accumulated underneath the surface of the dark-colored ice, the swarms of birds (were they seagulls?) that flew overhead, and the silence that surrounded the area. Not a single person was in sight, and so I sat down on the icy lake and watch the birds. I walked under the wooden lookout and noticed that thick blankets of ice had formed around the poles that support the lookout. A green algae-like substance had also formed on the wooden poles. Nestled deep under the lookout were a few birds, who seemed to be hiding from the wind and cold.
Those cracks in the ice are really cool! I think it's interesting all the different patterns the lake has since it's frozen. Love the pictures!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great picture! My place happens to be the boardwalk as well, it is definitely a beautiful location within the city's limits. I have never been under the wooden lookout, but next time I might have to give that a try, it sounds very intriguing!
ReplyDeleteThe sound of ice cracking and air bubbles bobbing really comes alive as you describe the pattern. That is the beautiful thing about words as they relate to patterns! I know I feel right in your place as you describe the ice patterns. I love it!
ReplyDeleteWow! what a cool sensation, to literally be walking on water and experiencing Lake Champlain in a whole new way! You describe the scene really eloquently, as well, and I love the image of the birds nestled underneath the dock. How did you feel during all of this? I know you noticed the absence of people, but did you feel lonely?
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures, too! Love the way the ice looks changes from picture to picture
